القاهرة – تحدثت السفيرة الأمريكية مارجريت سكوبي إلى 22 من الحاصلين على منحة الوكالة الأمريكية للتنمية الدولية للسلام عام 2008 والذين يستعدون الآن للسفر إلى الولايات المتحدة. يأتي الحائزون على منحة هذا العام من سبع دول مختلفة منها مصر ولبنان والضفة الغربية وقطاع غزة والمغرب.

وفي خطابها إلى الحاصلين على المنحة، قالت السفيرة: (إنني هنا منذ ثلاثة أشهر فقط، ولكنني حظيت خلال تلك المدة القصيرة بالكثير من الفرص للتحدث إلى مجموعات الطلبة الذين يستعدون للحصول على تجربة التعلم في الولايات المتحدة. وعلي أن أقول إن هذه من أفضل الفرص التي أتيحت لي، وإننا نأمل في أن تزيد هذه الفرصة من معرفتكم بالولايات المتحدة ومن معرفتنا ببلادكم أيضا.)

يهدف برنامج منح السلام إلى توفير فرص الدراسة لمدة عام في الولايات المتحدة للطلبة من المناطق الغير حضرية في الشرق الأوسط. ويشارك الطلبة في ندوة مكثفة عن الريادة قبيل رحيلهم، كما يشاركون في برنامج للخريجين بعد عودتهم. البرنامج تحت إشراف الوكالة الأمريكية للتنمية الدولية، وتغطي كل منحة تكاليف السفر والتأمين الصحي ورسوم التأشيرة وتكاليف المعيشة والمصروفات الدراسية والتكاليف الأخرى الخاصة بأنشطة البرنامج.

من شروط الحصول على المنحة أن يكون المتقدم من المقيمين في البلاد المشاركة (مصر والأردن ولبنان والمغرب وعمان وتونس والضفة الغربية وقطاع غزة واليمن) على أن تتراوح أعمارهم ما بين 18 و 25 عاما وأن يكونوا في منتصف دراستهم الجامعية. وتزيد فرصة المتقدمين ذوي التقدير العالي في الدراسة والمجيدين للغة الإنجليزية والراغبين في تمثيل بلادهم في الولايات المتحدة.

Cairo – Ambassador Scobey spoke to the 22 recipients of the 2008 USAID Peace Scholarship who are now in Cairo preparing to depart for the United States. This year's scholarship recipients come from seven different countries, including Egypt, Lebanon, the West Bank/Gaza, and Morocco. While speaking with the recipients, Ambassador Scobey remarked “I’ve only been here three months. But in this short time I’ve had several opportunities to speak to small groups of students who are preparing to have an educational experience in the U.S. And I have to say that these are some of the most rewarding opportunities I’ve ever had... It is our hope that the opportunity adds to your understanding of the United States and our understanding of your country.”

The Peace Scholarships program seeks to provide one-year of undergraduate study in the U.S. for students from non-urban areas from across the Middle East. Students participate in an intensive leadership seminar before departing and in an alumni program upon return. The program is administered by the U.S. Agency for International Development. Each scholarship covers international travel, health insurance, visa fees, a living stipend, academic tuition, and other costs associated with program activities.

Eligible candidates are residents of participating countries (Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Oman, Tunisia, West Bank/Gaza, or Yemen), between the ages of 18-25 who are currently in the midst of their undergraduate studies. Ideal candidates are those with strong academic records, proficient English, and a desire to represent their home countries in the U.S. Application deadlines for the 2009-2010 cycle of the Peace Scholarships program will be in February 2009.
