Cairo,
Egypt
Since 1995, the
United States and the Arab Republic of Egypt together have advanced the
frontiers of science through collaborative research and Junior Scientist
programs, supported by the governments under the U.S.-Egypt
Science & Technology Cooperative Agreement.
This agreement
recognizes how scientific and technological research can power an economy.
By establishing ties among 600 U.S. and Egyptian scientists and
engineers, the U.S-Egypt S&T relationship has produced almost 300 projects
and more than 30 workshops on issues ranging from basic needs such as clean
water and energy to more advanced technological research.
Two events
commemorating the tenth anniversary of the signing of the U.S.-Egypt Science and
Technology (S&T) Agreement were held recently in Egypt.
S&T
Agreement Renewal Ceremony
On November 29th,
at a ceremony held at the Alexandrina Bibliotheca, officials from the United
States and Egypt renewed the U.S.-Egypt S&T Agreement.

Youth Science
Summit-“ Two Rivers, One World”
As part of the 10th
anniversary event, U.S. and Egyptian high school students spent a week (11-16
December) in Egypt working jointly on a comparative study of the Hudson and Nile
Rivers. Through a U.S.-Egypt grant
with iEARN (www.iearn.org ) these high school students began an internet-based science
collaboration studying the Hudson and Nile Rivers. This project culminated in the Youth Science Summit held at
the Wadi Environmental Science Center (www.wesc.org).
The students also
enjoyed visiting with Dr. George Atkinson, Science and Technology Advisor to the
Secretary of State. See
more about the visit.
